With the rollout of the 2022 WVEMS Protocols, several major changes have been made to the EMT level protocols. One of the more noticeable changes is the preferred route of administration for Glucagon or EMT providers. EMTs will now be administering Glucagon by intramuscular injection.
An intramuscular injection is a route of medication administration that delivers the medication deep into the muscles. This allows the medication to be absorbed more quickly by the bloodstream than intranasal administration.
There are several administration sites for intramuscular injections, each with their own purpose and use. For glucagon injections, the appropriate site is the deltoid muscle, located on the upper arm near the shoulder.
The top of the triangle runs along the acromion, creating the top two points of the injection zone triangle.
If you feel along and identify the sides of the deltoid muscle, you can follow the deltoid muscle until it comes to a point. This point is the deltoid tuberosity and created the third and final point of your injection zone triangle.
A simple trick to create your injection zone is to simply lay the fingers of one hand along the acromion and create a "V" shape with your other hand, creating the injection Zone Triangle, as seen below.
Below you will find a quick video tutorial on administering an intramuscular injection in the deltoid, as well as a video on how to prepare Glucagon.
